The Opposite House Hotel
CHINA: Bucking the current trend of supersized hotel towers piercing Beijing’s sky, Swire Hotels’ Opposite House was constructed in the run up to last year’s Olympics. Located in a once down-market but now thriving part of the Sanlitun neighbourhood in Chaoyang, the 99-room boutique property is six storeys high and clad in screen-printed glass in various shades of green. The Village at Sanlitun is a new retail and entertainment complex hosting brands such as Apple, Uniqlo and Adidas, with crystalline buildings designed by Japanese and US architects including Mr Kuma, SHoP and Lot-ek.
The hotel takes its name from the guesthouse that sits on the opposite side of a traditional courtyard, blending old with new design. The Mediterranean styled Sureno and North Asian Bei restaurants have already scooped a number of prestigious awards for their cuisine in Time Out and Conde Nast Traveller. Similarly, the cool contemporary cocktail lounge Mesh and the Punk nightclub have been given great attention when it comes to style. Finally, the cosmopolitan Village Café with its international menu completes the F&B outlets within the hotel.
Hong Kong-based Audio System Consultants (Asia) Ltd (ASCL) won the contract to design, supply and install the A/V system for the complex, with project manager James Wu, senior project manager Billy Wong and five technicians taking on the nine-month task. ... Read more?

L 'Arc Casino Macau
With
the development of Macao cautiously beginning to pick up speed again, L’Arc has
opened with an extensive hotel and gaming complex – and advanced digital
BGM and signage, as Richard Lawn
discovers.
Opened
in September 2009, New World Developments’ L’Arc is the latest five-star hotel
accommodation and casino to make an appearance on the Macao skyline. The
21-storey hotel contains 301 guest rooms together with two casino floors,
offering 140 gaming tables and a host of F&B outlets. With a wealth of
facilities to accommodate, Hong Kong-based systems integrator ASCL was
contracted to design, install and supply the digital signage and background
music systems for the public areas of L’Arc.
The hotel’s facilities include The Coffee House,
The Lobby Lounge, Chinese, Japanese and French restaurants and a
round-the-clock Chinese diner. Additionally, there are sports, meeting and
banquet facilities, and an entertainment centre. Overseen by senior project manager,
Billy Wong, general contractor M&E pre-installed the cabling infrastructure
prior to ASCL’s arrival on-site in March 2009. The systems integrator has
established an office in Macao in response to the development the island is
enjoying, through which it can better serve local clients. Having spent several
years working in Beijing in addition to living in Hong Kong all his life, Mr
Wong enjoys the change in pace in Macao: ‘There’s a lot less traffic and it’s
not as congested – I find weekends relaxing,’ he comments. ‘For this application,
we were late on site owing to other construction work, but were made aware by Dino
Tech Limited [the project’s consultant] that the client demanded quality
background music and clear announcements, in addition to high-definition
digital signage. It was quite an undertaking, given the scale of the job and
limited time frame we had to complete it.’ ... Read more?

Grand Hyatt Shanghai
Nexus Technologies of Hong Kong have installed a networked background
Music (BGM) system into the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Shanghai. There are 15
channels of streamed BGM feeding all the Restaurants and Bars, as well as the
Executive Lounge, Fitness Center, Banquet Rooms and Hotel Lobby and all using
the MTSI ION0.2 Cobranet Interface.
Nexus Technologies supplied an Advantech industrial rack-mount PC
hosting music content provided by MusicStyling and where the content is
regularly updated through an internet connection. The PC is also running
Advantech’s Intelligent SNMP/HTTP System Manager Card that can email the Nexus
office in case of any system component failure.
The PC is fitted with an AudioScience ASI5408 PCI, 8 play/8 record, CobraNet
Card that streams the BGM content over the Hotel network to the various
outlets. The outlets each have an MTS ION0.2 Cobranet interface that decodes
the Cobranet BGM audio stream and supplies high quality analog audio to the
outlet sound system.

Zigong Sandalwood Forest Hotel
Location: Zigong City, Sichuan Province
The project contains a total of a grand ballroom (divisible into two small banquet halls) and three small meeting rooms. The system is divided into two sets of independently controlled audio systems, although by design can achieve the joint configuration of the audio functions. The system audio system uses the MTS ION8.8 as signal input and output devices, the conversion of external signals through the A / D into the Cobranet audio network is sent to the media host matrix for audio processing. The processed audio D / A conversion through the network sent via the ION8.8s analog/digital audio output to the amplifier and the speakers in the room to complete the room's audio sound reinforcement functions.
Conclusion: A banquet hall and conference rooms with two independent systems, which also acts as a single joint system of the multi-room installation.

A CobraNetTM network provided the backbone of the audio distribution system, with a Biamp AudiaFlex CM (CobraNetTM Main Frame) performing the routing and matrix. To eliminate the need for Biamp input / output cards and to ease processing power in the Biamp unit, Media Technology Systems (MTSi) COM Series multi channel amplifiers where deployed. These amplifiers have internal DSP and allow their analogue inputs to be routed to their CobraNetTM port, thus removing the need for input cards on this particular processor or providing additional inputs with other CobraNetTM enabled systems. With 12 amplifier channels running all of the public spaces this provided 12 analogue inputs at the rack location. While MTSi ION 0.2 and 2.0 CobraNetTM wall panels were located throughout the building to provide local inputs and outputs all via CobraNetTM. Working in such an old building the system architecture and cabling had to be kept simple. The fact that the MTSi ION wall panels convert analogue audio to CobraNetTM, and vice versa on the wall panel and not via a remote rack mounted piece of equipment improved the cabling and system design significantly.
